The "finished law school, starting Bar/Bri post"

Posted by AustinGroothuis | 21 Dec, 2007

Well, the pre-law blog has unofficially graduated from law school, pending passing grades in two courses. Thus, it is on to the Illinois bar exam in February.

I try not to make this blog too much about me, I don't think I'm an especially interesting person and don't have a special need for attention like some bloggers. I enjoy my privacy and luckily not enough people likely read this blog to matter anyway. But...I think the experiences involved with the bar exam review course (Bar/Bri) and the bar exam itself are worth chronicling here. So I'll try to post updates on some of my experiences along the way.

I've already (reluctantly) plunked down $2,900 for Illinois Bar/Bri. Hopefully you don't end up paying out of your own pockets after school. If you have a legal job already lined up for after school, your future employer may pay for bar review. I've also heard that Bar/Bri pays for the course if you rep for Bar/Bri at your school (just what I heard so don't hold me to that). So as you enter law school, look into repping for Bar/Bri.

I've already seen most of my friends go through Bar/Bri and the bar so I have a reference point. It was not pretty to watch most of them stress out more and for a longer period of time than for law school exams.

I will take Bar/Bri in the Winter. Most people take the Summer review course because they graduate law school in the Spring. I will also work full-time and attending Bar/Bri classes at night. Most people don't work full-time during Bar/Bri because they have more sense than that.

Today I picked up my books from the Chicago Bar/Bri offices. There are about 8 or so very thick books and a CD weighing maybe 35 lbs. I have no idea what the books do at this point. I don't care until the classes are about to start on January 2nd. Not a lot of time off after the New Year, but this is preferable to the summer review class which pretty much starts right after finals for a lot of law grads. The actual bar exam is in late February, so there is a lot of studying ahead.
